Profile Narrative: Carrie first began experiencing unusual stomach pain in 2018, describing it as a gnawing sensation that often occurred when she had not eaten. At the time, she was under significant stress caring for family members and assumed the pain was related to an ulcer. After delaying medical care for nearly two years, worsening acid reflux led her to see a gastrointestinal specialist. An initial endoscopy revealed an area that appeared unusual, prompting a second endoscopy with ultrasound. During that procedure, the physician identified and ablated what he believed was a tumor and initially reassured Carrie that it was not cancer. Shortly afterward, however, pathology results confirmed a cancer diagnosis, leading to referral to oncology at the age of 35. In September 2010, Carrie underwent surgery that resulted in the removal of approximately 10 percent of her stomach. She was later referred to a sarcoma specialist at Siteman Cancer Center, where she began close monitoring with frequent CT scans. While early scans showed intermittent lung nodules that raised concern for metastases, these findings ultimately resolved without additional treatment. Carrie has remained without recurrence and was deemed NED at her first follow up after surgery. Over time, her surveillance schedule transitioned from frequent scans to annual follow ups with X rays and blood work. She credits her long term outcome to early surgical intervention and consistent monitoring. Outside of cancer, Carrie is a maternity, newborn, and family photographer based in the St. Louis area. She enjoys reading, listening to podcasts, baking, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. She emphasizes the importance of leaning on a support system and finding positivity, noting that even small victories deserve recognition.
